The now-famous poem by Pastor Martin Niemöller (“First they came…”) has been circulating widely for years now.
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me
He is hailed as a brave hero who defied the Nazis.
But did you know that he was initially a Nazi sympathizer?
As a Lutheran pastor — yes, someone who supposedly understood the Bible, the prophets, and Jesus — he supported Hitler in the 20s-30s.
